What if there wasn't a CD player?!

I had a fun idea today that basically hitchhikes off of the "Deserted Island" movie game - you know, the one where you have to pick three movies you'd take with you if you got stranded on a deserted island? It got me thinking...what if I had to create one CD of songs, knowing that I could never listen to any other music for the rest of my life? In other words, if I could take one mix CD to a deserted island, what would be on it?

What's interesting to me about this idea is that I would probably have to take more than "favorite songs" into consideration. Often I listen to a song that I don't think is that valuable musically, only because it's highly nostalgic. They say the sense of smell is the sense most clearly connected with memory, but for me, listening to "Don't Treat Me Bad" by Firehouse or "Friends" by Michael W. Smith puts me in a time and place like little else can. Then again, I wouldn't want to fill up the CD with music that didn't excite me musically; and certainly I'd want a mix of genres to sate my different needs for different states of mind.

Long story short: I'm going to do this. Would you like to join me?

Some of you know that Derek and I have done a series of "song weeks" together, and I think we're going to try this idea together, where we'll each make our personal CDs, swap them with each other, and then record a few covers from the other's CD. I'd love to hear Derek make an acoustic version of Baby Got Back - oh wait, he already did. And Sir Mixalot may *just* miss the cut for my CD anyway.

So, as I think about my CD and what would be on it, I already know a few songs I would include. Part of the problem is that my CD would probably be different every day, but at some point I'll have to decide for good what is on the track list and what gets sacrificed to a black hole of abandoned music. Surely after I press record I'll say, "Doh! How could I have forgotten _____?" At this point, though, I already know that my CD must include:

1. At least one of my original songs ("Ricki Lake..." is not in the running)
2. At least one of Derek's original songs (would've been on there even if Derek wasn't involved in this)
3. "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" - Weezer (do you believe what I sing now?)
4. One Dave Matthews song (Crush/Stay/Dave+Tim=TwoStep come to mind)
5. One Christian song for nostalgia purposes (Caedmon's Call or Jars of Clay a good possibility here)
6. One 80's song (Poison anyone? Warrant or Bon Jovi, perhaps? so many choices...)

Oh, CRAP. Who packed the Discman and earphones? I thought YOU were bringing it?!

One of the difficult things about this is, if I was really stranded alone on a desert island, I think I'd be really depressed, and music that reminded me of a time off the island would make that worse.

So I'm defining the task as "Hurley's playlist." If I was Hurley, from LOST, and I have the only CD player on the island, but there are other people and I'm not going to be constantly depressed, what would I want on the one mix CD I brought along? Maybe that redefinition seems like a fine point, but I was getting hung up on "How would I feel about being on the island?"

Or, since it's the only music I could ever listen to again, maybe I'd put something really terrible on there. I mean, whatever I put on there, I'll eventually get sick of it, so I might as well get sick of something really bad. :-)

Anyway, great idea, man!
